Oil prices are edging higher after retreating to pre-conflict levels.
This comes as renewed tensions in the Middle East revive concerns over disruptions to global crude supply and their potential impact on fuel-importing countries such as Ghana.
The latest gains follow reports of strikes involving the United States and Iran, as well as attacks on commercial tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping corridor through which a significant share of global oil exports passes.
The renewed geopolitical uncertainty has prompted traders to factor in the risk of tighter supplies, pushing crude prices higher.
Checks by Citi Business News on Wednesday, July 8, 20026 showed the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude trading at about $74 per barrel, while Brent crude, was trading around $78 per barrel.
The rebound comes after oil prices had eased in recent weeks, providing some relief for fuel-importing economies and contributing to consecutive reductions in ex-pump fuel prices in Ghana.
However, the renewed upward movement in crude prices threatens that trend. Ghana imports the bulk of its refined petroleum products, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to developments on the international oil market, alongside movements in the cedi and international freight costs.
If the increase in crude prices is sustained over the coming days, Oil Marketing Companies could face higher import costs, which may eventually be passed on to consumers during subsequent fuel pricing windows.
A reversal in the recent decline in fuel prices could increase transportation costs for households and businesses, while also raising operating expenses for sectors that rely heavily on fuel, including manufacturing, logistics, agriculture and mining.
