The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has joined the government’s National General Cleaning Exercise, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and urging a sustained culture of sanitation beyond periodic clean-up campaigns.
Management, staff and students of the university participated in the nationwide exercise on Friday,July 10, 2026 sweeping roads, desilting drains, clearing overgrown vegetation and collecting refuse across the campus and its surroundings. The initiative forms part of a broader national effort to improve environmental sanitation and encourage institutions and communities to take greater responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings.
The exercise was attended by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, who commended the university community for actively supporting the campaign. She encouraged staff and students to extend the spirit of the exercise beyond the university by promoting good sanitation practices in their homes and communities, stressing that keeping the environment clean should become a daily responsibility rather than an occasional activity.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University, Dr Jethro W. Brooks Jr., thanked members of the university community for their strong participation, describing environmental cleanliness as essential to creating a safe and healthy learning environment. He urged staff and students to continue supporting the national campaign by making sanitation a personal commitment wherever they live and work.
Government declared July 10 and 11 National General Cleaning Days following the June floods, with the campaign focusing on desilting drains, removing debris and improving sanitation in flood-prone communities as part of broader efforts to mitigate future flood risks.
Government says the exercise is expected to foster greater public awareness of environmental sanitation while encouraging institutions, businesses and households to play a more active role in creating cleaner and healthier communities.
