A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has acknowledged the government’s responsibility for failing to completely address flooding challenges after more than a year in office.
He said although there were reasons behind the persistence of flooding, the government accepted responsibility and remained committed to finding lasting solutions to the problem.
His comments follow a nationwide clean-up exercise directed by President John Dramani Mahama in response to recent floods that claimed lives, displaced residents and submerged homes in several parts of the country.
The exercise, which began on Friday, July 10, from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., continued on Saturday, July 11, with President Mahama, government officials and citizens participating in clean-up activities in affected communities.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, July 11, Suhuyini said the government recognised the concerns of Ghanaians and would not shift blame for the challenges.
“As a responsible government, I always say that regardless of the reasons we adduce as to why we were not able to completely prevent it altogether, we accept that responsibility,” he said.
He added that Ghanaians expected solutions to the flooding situation, noting that the government made commitments during the 2024 election campaign to address such challenges.
“We may not be able to provide all these solutions in a matter of one year and six months, but we will do our best to ensure that many of these teething problems will be a thing of the past after the four-year mandate,” he stated.
Mr Suhuyini stressed that the government would take responsibility rather than shift blame for the situation.
“This government will not shift blame; we accept responsibility wholeheartedly. Could we have done better in managing the effects of the floods? Yes. Are you satisfied with the output in terms of dealing with the floods? No, we could have done better as a responsible government. And we accept that responsibility,” he said.
