Parliament suspended over Afenyo-Markin’s comment on Prof Opoku-Agyemang

The debate on the State of the Nation address by President Akufo-Addo was put on hold by Parliament due to rising tensions within the minority caucus.

This was due to remarks made by the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, about the running mate of the NDC, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

The Majority Leader, during his final remarks on the SONA, critiqued John Mahama’s choice of Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as his running mate.

He suggested this choice reflects a lack of forward-thinking and visionary leadership within the NDC.

“Mr Speaker, it is the same old NDC. It is the same old John Mahama. Mr Speaker perish the thought, should he even get the opportunity, he has only four years constitutionally. Mr Speaker, there will be no sense of urgency in him because he has nothing to lose.

“Even if you look at his choice of running mate. He could not get somebody that one could say that they are planning for the future. The person is over 70 years old. There is no succession plan. Mr Speaker from day one, the government will be in crisis. Mr Speaker, they went to pick a very old person who could not perform at the Education Ministry.”

His comments ignited a strong reaction among the minority members, who called for a retraction and an apology.

However, the Majority Leader proceeded with his debate, leading to disruptions from the minority members who began banging tables.

In response to the escalating situation, the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, decided to suspend the sitting for an hour.
