Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Works and Housing, has disclosed that the government has commenced the construction of 100 homes for persons affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The Minister disclosed that a sod was cut for the first 100 homes in the Central and North Tongu Districts of the Volta Region on Monday, March 25, 2024.

He told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM that officers from the Housing Department of the Ministry and some contractors and consultants will be visiting the site for further work in the coming weeks.

Oppong Nkrumah also highlighted the scope of work that needs to be done before all the affected people are properly resettled.

“The first step was to provide relief items and when the water levels receded, victims were helped to return to the communities. 88,000 people were affected and over 5,000 homes were affected for these persons, we need to go through with the collection of their particulars to help in resettling them and it is not just about brick and mortar issue, it goes beyond that.

“It is also about schools and reinstating the way of life of the people and so we are going to validate the data that we will collect to ensure their resettlement.”

“We will work with the various assemblies and traditional authorities and we are currently working with them to validate some of the data. We cut sod for 100 homes and we are going to ensure that we do that across the other districts and communities that got affected in the flooding and we will need all the state agencies to come on board.”
