We’ll continue to engage Organised Labour to improve – SSNIT Boss

Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT),  has pledged to continue engaging Organised Labour and other relevant stakeholders to improve the operations and investment portfolios of the Trust.

Osafo-Maafo said that SSNIT has positively improved over the period and aims to continue on that trajectory through broader engagements.

He was directly addressing Organised Labour after the group declared an industrial strike effective today [July 15] to protest the sale of SSNIT’s 60 percent stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Organised Labour in a press conference on Friday, July 12 declared an indefinite strike to protest against the transactions.

SSNIT subsequently issued a notice terminating the sale after other unions and associations declared their intentions to also withdraw their services.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Mr. Osafo-Maafo assured Organised Labour of the Trust’s continuous engagement with all the relevant stakeholders.

“My message is very straightforward, the management and board of the Trust will continue to manage the portfolio and assets to achieve the best long-term returns. Organised Labour will be aware that we have improved and we will continue to engage and improve.”

Organised Labour said it would continue with its strike until the SSNIT’s board is dissolved, despite the sale process being terminated.

“SSNIT’s function is to ensure social security for the population and so the leadership [of Organised Labour] recognised that the way by which the hotels were being sold was flawed and if you look at the content of the letter, we said we were not going to call off the strike until SSNIT board is dissolved,” the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Kenneth Koomson told Bernard Avle on Monday.
