Patients seeking healthcare services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) were left stranded on Saturday, June 6, following the commencement of an indefinite strike action by doctors at the facility.
The industrial action, declared by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), disrupted healthcare delivery at one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals, leaving many patients uncertain about where to seek treatment.
The strike follows an emergency meeting held by KADA on June 5, during which members reviewed recent developments at the hospital, including persistent congestion at the Emergency Department and the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.
A visit to the facility by Citi News disclosed scenes of frustration and disappointment as patients who had arrived expecting to receive medical attention were informed that doctors had withdrawn their services.
Several patients were seen leaving the hospital premises after being unable to access consultations and treatment.
The impact of the strike was particularly evident among patients requiring specialist care and follow-up reviews.
Many expressed concern about the implications of the industrial action on their health, especially those suffering from chronic medical conditions.
Among those affected was asthmatic patient Baba Aliba Camara, who said he had already spent a day at the hospital undergoing medical assessments and had returned hoping to continue treatment.
“I was here yesterday at 6am and the doctor asked me to go and run some tests and so I came today to see a doctor but there is no doctor to attend to me and so I am going home. I don’t know what will happen to me between today and tomorrow when I go home.”
His situation reflects the difficulties being faced by many patients who depend on KATH for essential medical services.
For some, the strike has interrupted ongoing treatment plans, while others requiring urgent consultations have been forced to seek alternatives elsewhere.
