The Gender, Women, Children and Social Protection Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently launched the party’s innovative ‘Manifesto Desk’ in the Ledzokuku Constituency as part of its campaign strategy ahead of the 2024 general elections.
‘Manifesto Desk’, part of the NDC’s Smile Again Campaign, was set up in Teshie Tsuibloo, Accra, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, offering residents the opportunity to engage directly with party representatives on the key policy proposals outlined in the Resetting Ghana 2024 NDC Manifesto.
This novel platform allows voters to ask questions, raise concerns, and gain a deeper understanding of the NDC’s policy framework.
A Strategic Move in a Key Battleground
Ledzokuku, considered a crucial swing constituency, was flipped by the NDC in the 2020 elections when Hon. Ben Ayiku unseated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nii Okoe Boye in a closely contested race.
With the upcoming December 2024 elections, the NDC aims to solidify its influence in the constituency, relying on grassroots engagement initiatives like the Manifesto Desk to retain the seat.
Key Policy Promises for Ledzokuku
During the event, NDC communicators outlined key policies designed to benefit the Ledzokuku community.
One of the highlighted promises was the reform of premix fuel distribution, an issue of significant importance to the constituency’s fishing community.
The NDC assured voters that the reforms would ensure fairer and more transparent access to fuel, which has long been a source of frustration for local fisherfolk.
Broader National Policies Highlighted
Beyond local issues, the Manifesto Desk also spotlighted several national initiatives aimed at addressing the broader needs of the electorate.
Key among these were the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Care), and the Mo Ne Yo Pension Programme.
The NDC also introduced a suite of women-focused policies, including the Free Sanitary Pad Programme, the establishment of a National Women’s Bank, and increased support for persons with disabilities, particularly through the provision of free tertiary education.
Positive Feedback from the Community
Residents of Ledzokuku expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage directly with party officials. Many attendees valued the chance to provide feedback on the NDC’s proposals and felt more informed about the party’s plans for the upcoming elections.
One market woman, commenting on the NDC’s Market Enhancement Project, said:
“This modern market will really help us. It’s something we’ve needed for years, and I’m glad the NDC is addressing it.”
Expanding the Initiative
With the success of the Manifesto Desk in Ledzokuku, the NDC plans to roll out the initiative in other key constituencies as part of its broader strategy to intensify voter education and engagement ahead of the 2024 elections.
The Road to 2024
As the December 7 general elections draw closer, the NDC is determined to retain key parliamentary seats like Ledzokuku and secure the presidency for John Dramani Mahama.
The Manifesto Desk is seen as a crucial component of the party’s grassroots engagement efforts, aimed at ensuring voters are well-informed about its policy proposals and vision for the future.
