The Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey has launched a three-day demonstration starting today, October 3, through Saturday, October 5, to demand the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters, primarily members of the Democracy Hub group, who were arrested during protests held from September 21 to 23.

The protest march will commence at Okponglo, passing through the car park of the Accra Sports Stadium, and is organized under the slogans “#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”

The demonstration aims to draw attention to the detrimental effects of illegal mining (galamsey) and advocate for stronger action against the practice.

Noble Amedowu, one of the lawyers representing the activists, told Citi News that a formal petition will be submitted to Parliament, the Attorney General, and the Lands Commission on the first day of the protest.

“The demonstration will start from Okponglo through Association International to Kawukudi Junction to Parliament House, where we will present a petition to Parliament and also present another petition to the Land’s Commission and the AG.

“There will be another demonstration on the second day. On the third day, there will be a night vigil, where the group will display the devastating effect of galamsey on the environment, especially on the Pra, Ankobra and Birim Rivers.”
