England and Ghana shared the spoils in a 0–0 draw in their Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston, in a match defined by missed chances, disciplined defending, and a standout goalkeeping display from Benjamin Asare.
England dominated large phases of the encounter and created the clearer scoring opportunities, particularly in the second half, but were repeatedly denied by wasteful finishing and Ghana’s resilient backline.
The Europeans came close in the 86th minute when Bukayo Saka forced a sharp save from Asare with a low left-footed strike from outside the box, after being set up by a headed pass from Declan Rice. From the resulting passage of play, Nico O’Reilly rattled the crossbar with a header, summing up England’s frustration in front of goal.
Harry Kane also had a golden opportunity earlier but lifted his left-footed effort from close range over the bar, while Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson both saw attempts either blocked or saved as England piled on pressure.
Ghana, though largely on the back foot, showed flashes of threat on the counterattack. Prince Adu had a shot blocked in the second half, while Antoine Semenyo was caught offside after a promising move. Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu were involved in transitions forward, but clear-cut chances remained limited.
The match was tightly contested in midfield, with several tactical fouls disrupting rhythm on both sides. Iñaki Williams was booked in the second half for a bad foul as Ghana sought to break up England’s attacking momentum.
Both teams made multiple substitutions to adjust the tempo, with England introducing the likes of Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers in search of a breakthrough, while Ghana also rotated their frontline with changes including Abdul Fatawu, Prince Adu and Kojo Peprah Oppong.
Despite England’s sustained pressure and superior possession, Ghana held firm with organised defending and an assured performance from goalkeeper Asare, who proved decisive in preserving the clean sheet.
The result leaves both sides with a point apiece in Group L, with England left to reflect on missed opportunities, while Ghana will take encouragement from a disciplined defensive display against one of the tournament favourites.
