Bawku conflict: Three killed in latest gun battle, houses set ablaze

Three people, including a schoolgirl, have been killed in the latest gun exchange in Bawku, bringing the death toll to 32.

The violence erupted on Friday, November 29, 2024, following an ongoing conflict in the area.

The latest fatalities follow the death of another individual just two days earlier, highlighting the escalating violence in the region.

The gunfire intensified around the Gingande-Zongo area, where several homes were also reported to have been set on fire.

The shootings, which began around midnight, continued into the afternoon until approximately 1 PM. In addition to those killed, many others have sustained gunshot wounds, with some in critical condition.

The violence, which has plagued the Bawku area since late October 2024, often intensifies during curfew hours.

Residents and security forces are struggling to contain the situation, as rival groups clash, and ambushes targeting travellers have added to the tension.

The conflict’s resurgence follows the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, with some sources claiming that his return has fueled the renewed hostilities.

The Bawku region, already fraught with ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, has been further destabilised by these ongoing attacks.

Local authorities are under pressure to restore order, but the situation remains tense and unpredictable.
