In a move to bolster climate change awareness and research in Ghana, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Vice Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group 1, has donated a collection of newly published IPCC books to the Balme Library at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The donation marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change through education, research, and policymaking.
The donation comprises an extensive collection of the IPCC’s latest publications, including the main assessment reports from its three working groups. These reports delve into critical aspects of climate change, such as its impact on the physical world, the implications for ecosystems and human societies, and strategies to mitigate the phenomenon’s adverse effects.
Also included in the donation were special reports addressing specific facets of climate change, such as its effects on oceans, the relationship between land use and global warming, and the implications of a 1.5-degree rise in global temperatures for Ghana and the African continent.
Prof. Klutse’s gesture underscores her commitment to fostering informed discourse on climate change among students, researchers, policymakers, and the general public.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Prof. Klutse highlighted her personal contribution to the writing of the IPCC reports and the importance of making such critical information accessible.
“It is important for everyone to understand the significance of climate change—whether it is the ordinary person gaining basic awareness, researchers deepening their understanding to advance their work, or students learning about its multifaceted impacts,” she stated.
She also emphasised the relevance of the books for policymakers, noting that the insights they contain are invaluable for crafting strategies to combat climate change’s effects.
“We want to advocate for climate change awareness and action,” Prof. Klutse stressed. “I believe making these resources available at the Balme Library is a step in the right direction.”
Receiving the donation on behalf of the library, Senior Assistant Librarian and Head of Acquisitions, Emelia A. O. Agyei, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generous contribution.
“This is not just a book donation,” she said. “It is an insightful addition to the library’s collection that will significantly enhance access to crucial information on climate change. We will process these books and ensure they are readily available for use by all.”
Ms. Agyei further remarked on the unique opportunity these resources present for Ghana, a nation without a national library.
She pledged that the Balme Library would position itself as a hub for disseminating climate-related knowledge, particularly to policymakers tasked with developing sustainable solutions to address climate change.
Prof. Klutse is a distinguished academic and climate scientist, currently serving as the Head of the Physics Department at the University of Ghana. She is also the only Ghanaian woman holding a position on the IPCC, a testament to her expertise and dedication to addressing climate change on a global scale.
Her leadership role in the IPCC Working Group 1 places her at the forefront of understanding the physical science basis of climate change, a critical area of study in the global fight against this pressing challenge.
