The Ministry of the Interior has officially declared Tuesday, January 7, 2025, as a statutory public holiday in celebration of Constitution Day.
This declaration was made in a statement issued by the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
This date is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, following his victory in the 2024 general elections.
Constitution Day is an important event in Ghana’s national calendar, marking the implementation of the 1992 Constitution and the establishment of the Fourth Republic.
First celebrated in 2019, this holiday highlights Ghana’s dedication to the principles of the rule of law, constitutional governance, and democratic values.
The 1992 Constitution, which became effective on January 7, 1993, after receiving approval in a referendum held on April 28, 1992, serves as the essential framework for Ghana’s political system. It outlines the structure, powers, and responsibilities of the government, along with the rights and duties of its citizens.
Additionally, January 7 is particularly significant during election years, as it is the date when Ghana’s Heads of State are inaugurated.
The government formalized the recognition of Constitution Day as a legal public holiday through an amendment to the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601). This amendment designated Constitution Day as the commemorative day, replacing the previous observance of 1st July, which was known as Republic Day.
The Fourth Republic, which was founded under the 1992 Constitution, holds the distinction of being the longest-lasting republic in Ghana’s history, enduring for more than 27 years to date. In contrast, the first three republics experienced disruptions due to military coups that overthrew civilian administrations.
Prominent presidents of the Fourth Republic include:
– Jerry John Rawlings (NDC): Served from January 7, 1993, to January 7, 2001.
– John Agyekum Kufuor (NPP): Took office on January 7, 2001, and served two terms until January 7, 2009.
– John Evans Atta Mills (NDC): Elected in 2009 but passed away in office on July 24, 2012.
– John Dramani Mahama (NDC): Succeeded President Mills and served from 2012 to 2017.
– Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (NPP): Sworn in on January 7, 2017, and set to end his tenure on January 7, 2024.
