Genser Energy unveils new market to revive Appiatse’s economy

A new market facility has been commissioned in the Appiatse community of Western Region, marking a significant step in the town’s recovery from the devastating explosion that levelled much of the area in January 2022.

Built by a leading independent power producer Genser Energy in partnership with Ghana Union Assurance (GUA), the market is expected to revitalise local commerce and restore livelihoods that were shattered by the disaster.

The project was made possible through a fundraiser initiated after the explosion, where donations were received and matched by Genser Energy and GUA. The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Ghana facilitated the reception of these donations, ensuring the necessary financial support to bring the project to life.

For many traders, the new market represents more than just a place of business.

“The explosion took away everything – our homes, our lives, our businesses,” said Faustina Nyarko, a market trader who lost her shop in the disaster. “This new market gives us a fresh start. I can now sell my goods in a proper space, and my children can have a future.”

Another vendor, Mavis Asante, shared similar sentiments. “We have been struggling to survive for too long since the disaster occurred. This market will bring back life to Appiatse,” she said. “It means our community can thrive again. A big thanks to Genser and their partners.”

The facility, officially unveiled at a ceremony attended by local authorities, traditional leaders, and business representatives, includes 18 stalls for vendors, 14 shops for businesses and retailers, and six washrooms, two of which are designed for persons with disabilities.

The market also features colourful murals commissioned by Genser Energy and created by artists Bigland Quartey, Moses Taylor, Offei Tetteh, King Larry, Nana Sarpong, and Goba Timothy. The mural, which took five days to complete, symbolises “Hope,” reflecting the community’s strength and determination to rebuild and emerge stronger after the explosion.

Speaking about the significant of the mural, Bigland Quartey, said: “Through the painting, we aimed to capture the strength of the community and its collective journey toward restoration.”

Speaking at the event, Daniel Ayi, Vice President of Operations & Maintenance, Power at Genser Energy, said: “Let this moment remind us of what is possible when communities and businesses work together towards a common goal.”

“Genser Energy remains committed to supporting initiatives that uplift and empower people,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni Valley, Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, praised Genser Energy and GUA for their role in the reconstruction effort, describing the market as a crucial catalyst for economic revival.

“This will lessen the burden of the victims of the explosion and bring back dignity to the people of Appiatse,” he stated.

The Chief of Appiatse, speaking on behalf of the Beppo Divisional Stool, Nana Atta Kojo Brembi II, also expressed gratitude for the initiative.

“When we look at this market here today, it is a place that will serve many generations after us,” he said.

The project aligns with the companies’ commitment to sustainable economic development, reinforcing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8 on sustained economic growth and Goal 9 on resilient infrastructure.
