Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited has called on Municipal and District Assemblies to fully implement sanitation bylaws and strictly apply sanctions against individuals who indiscriminately dump refuse in communities.
The waste management company, which has also raised concerns over unknown persons setting fire to refuse containers, says such careless acts shorten the lifespan of the waste bins and undermine the sanitation progress made over the years.
Speaking to the media on Friday, June 27, after the unveiling of 10 new waste management trucks and 20 dumpsters for the Eastern Region at Koforidua Jackson Park, Edward Ziba, the Eastern North Coordinator for Zoomlion Ghana Limited, emphasised the need for enforcement.
“We urge the assemblies to implement their bylaw so that those who have been throwing off refuse can be reduced. Some people also put hot substances in the containers, reducing the lifespan of the containers. We urge the Environmental Health Unit to help us educate the public,” he said.
Also addressing the media, the Eastern South Coordinator, Madame Faustina Shardey, reaffirmed Zoomlion’s commitment to ensuring proper sanitation nationwide. She noted that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared duty, and encouraged both residents and organisations to procure dustbins for use at homes and workplaces to curb improper waste disposal.
“As we are cleaning, people are dumping refuse on the ground. We are using this medium to tell them that waste management is a public issue, and we are urging everybody to come on board. They should also inculcate the habit of getting dustbins in their homes, so that their children will also know how to keep their surroundings clean,” she said.
