The Oti Regional House of Chiefs has called for urgent national security intervention in the Nkwanta South Municipality following recent clashes that have led to the deaths of civilians.
The area has witnessed the shooting of two Konkomba youths by unknown assailants at Abrewankor Junction, leaving both in critical condition. In a separate incident, a student of Nkwanta Senior High School died after being struck by a stray bullet while writing his mock examination.
During President John Dramani Mahama’s final thank-you tour in the Oti Region on Friday, July 25, the President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Soglo Alloh IV, appealed for the establishment of a permanent military base in either Dambai or Nkwanta to strengthen security and ensure a swift response to threats.
“The region is currently experiencing serious chieftaincy and ethnic conflict, and these are of national security concern. There are pockets of ethnic violence in Nkwanta South. We urgently need the attention of national security to tackle the conflict before it escalates.
“We are also pleading with the government to establish a permanent military base in the region, to be situated either in Dambai or Nkwanta,” Nana Soglo Alloh IV said
Following the concerns, President Mahama called on all groups involved in the conflict to lay down their arms and prioritise peace.
