The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has issued a stern directive to the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Frederick Festinous Faidoo, demanding immediate action to tackle the worsening sanitation situation in the metropolis.
The Minister expressed disappointment and concern over the widespread filth that has engulfed parts of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, particularly the growing accumulation of plastic waste, which he described as a major environmental threat.
Speaking during the commemoration of this year’s World Environment Day in Takoradi, Ahmed Ibrahim did not hide his frustration over the state of cleanliness in the oil-rich city.
He attributed the sanitation challenges largely to ineffective management and called on the Metropolitan Assembly to intensify efforts aimed at restoring cleanliness and environmental order.
He warned that if immediate interventions are not undertaken, the situation could worsen and have long-term consequences for the city and its coastal ecosystem.
“I wasn’t happy when I came here. The plastics issue is a problem. Why should we get more plastic than fish in our sea? The plastics you see around will find their way into the sea. I don’t want to conclude that Sekondi-Takoradi is the dirtiest metropolis. The mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi must be held responsible for the dirt.”
