The Member of Parliament for Zabzugu, Alhassan Umar, has said the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will help restore public confidence in Ghana’s judiciary.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, September 1, 2025, removed Justice Torkornoo from office in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

A statement from the Presidency explained that the decision followed the recommendation of a committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by a citizen, Daniel Ofori. The removal took immediate effect.

The statement, signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized that the President was constitutionally bound to act on the committee’s recommendation.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom with Eno Safo on Thursday, September 4, Mr. Umar argued that the action would rebuild public trust in the judiciary and strengthen Ghana’s democracy.

“On the contrary, this is rather going to increase public trust in the judiciary and the separation of powers. Ghanaians lost trust in the judiciary, and so, the resetting agenda is on to bring trust into the judiciary,” he said.

The Zabzugu MP further stressed that investor confidence in Ghana is closely tied to a credible judicial system.

“Any country, for the investment environment to grow, you must have a strong regulatory environment, which is part of the trust in the judiciary,” he stated.
