The Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly says it is putting in place contingency measures to supply water to communities and key institutions expected to be severely affected by a planned shutdown of water supply to the area on Thursday, December 4.

The shutdown, announced by the Accra West Regional branch of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in a statement on Tuesday, December 2, is to enable maintenance works on a perforated main transmission line that serves the western part of Accra. The interruption is expected to last 12 hours.

Speaking to Citi News, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Felix Odartey Lamptey said the assembly’s preparations are intended to ensure residents are not unduly affected should the works extend beyond the scheduled period.

He noted that the assembly has begun using information vans and other local communication channels to encourage residents to store adequate water ahead of the interruption.

Mr. Lamptey also assured that critical institutions, including hospitals, as well as communities likely to be heavily impacted, will be supplied with water through the assembly’s DRIP tanker service.

“Myself and the DRIP coordinator will earmark areas we know are usually hard-hit, and we will send our water tanker there to supply them. Any community or centre that expects to be heavily affected should contact their Assembly Member, and we will ensure they receive the needed water. We are on standby,” he said.
