John Jinapor earns PhD with research linking FDI, energy use in Africa

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has earned a PhD in Development Finance from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, after successfully defending a doctoral thesis that examines the intersection of energy, foreign direct investment (FDI), and environmental sustainability across the African continent.

The degree was officially conferred during the university’s graduation ceremony on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, marking a significant academic milestone for the Minister, whose research has already yielded publications in respected international journals.

Mr. Jinapor’s thesis, Inclusive Growth and Environmental Quality: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa, provides fresh empirical insights into how African economies can pursue growth that is both inclusive and environmentally responsible.

His research analysed panel data spanning 2000 to 2019, exploring how FDI and energy consumption influence inclusive economic expansion in the region.

The study also examined the contribution of institutional quality in reducing the environmental impacts of economic activity, revealing how stronger governance frameworks help countries manage pollution and resource degradation more effectively.

Another key dimension of the research assessed how financial development and ICT penetration can support energy sufficiency across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The findings show that improved access to finance and technological advancement can bolster energy security, strengthen production systems, and help economies transition toward cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

Overall, the thesis offers practical policy guidance for governments seeking to combine growth acceleration, reduced inequality, and environmental sustainability aligning with Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The PhD adds to Mr. Jinapor’s broad academic background, which includes master’s degrees in Energy Economics, Development Finance, Marketing, and Economic Policy Management.

Beyond academia, Mr Jinapor has been a central figure in Ghana’s energy transition efforts. He chairs the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation and serves on the board of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

He has also represented Ghana on major global platforms, including COP28 in Dubai, the IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, and the Mining Indaba in South Africa.

His newly completed research is expected to enrich national and continental debates on how Africa can attract sustainable investment, expand energy access and manage its transition to a greener and more resilient economic future.
