The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat has deployed security personnel across Greater Kumasi as it begins an operation to clamp down on commercial transport operators charging illegal fares.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, January 26, the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari, who is leading the exercise, said that the operation involves more than 20 personnel from the regional office, supported by officers drawn from various district security units within the metropolis.

He indicated that the operation targets commercial drivers, conductors, and loading boys who unlawfully increase transport fares, adding that individuals arrested during the exercise will be handed over to the Ghana Police Service to face the law.

According to him, the main objective of the exercise is to ease traffic congestion in the city and also relieve passengers and commuters of the stress of finding transport to their various destinations after a hard day’s work.

He added that his outfit is collaborating with the management of Metro Mass Transit to deploy buses to convey passengers from selected communities in Greater Kumasi to Kejetia and other destinations.

“We are going to partner with the KMA, we are going to partner with the police, arrest those who are charging illegal prices and ensure there’s sanctity within the bus terminals within the Metro points.

“We are starting it today, so we are going to do evenings and early mornings now. Early in the morning, there will be a team at the various bus terminals,” he said.
