A 14-year-old boy, Matthew Mahama, has drowned while swimming in a river at Fiapre Catholic Junction on the Sunyani Ring Road in the Bono Region.
According to a Facebook post by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Saturday, February 7, the incident occurred on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at about 8:51 a.m., prompting the Sunyani Municipal Fire Station to dispatch a rescue team led by Station Officer Two (STNO II) Clement Takyi.

Preliminary information indicates that the boy had gone swimming in the river with friends when he got into difficulty and drowned.
The body has been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation.
Ghana National Fire Service also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the public to be cautious around rivers, dams and other water bodies.
The Service also reiterated its commitment to public education on drowning prevention and assured that it will continue to respond promptly and professionally to emergencies to help save lives.
