Eastern Region: New Juaben South crime officer warns against running brothels

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Asante Kusi, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, has cautioned the public against operating a brothel, noting that the act constitutes an offence under Section 277 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

He explained that a brothel is an establishment where clients pay to engage in sexual activities with sex workers, adding that such operations fuel organised crime, facilitate human trafficking, and expose vulnerable women and girls to exploitation.

According to him, brothels also heighten the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and compromise community safety.

ASP Kusi noted that the New Juaben South Municipal Police Command has intensified intelligence‑led operations to clamp down on brothel activities within Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.

He referenced a recent police operation during which 12 Nigerian women, including a 15‑year‑old minor, were arrested at a suspected brothel allegedly operated by one Omari Gyamfi.

The suspects, together with the operator, are in police custody assisting with investigations and will be arraigned upon completion of the process.
