A 25-year-old woman who has remained unconscious for months following a stampede during a military recruitment exercise in Kumasi has received a visit from a delegation of the Ministry of Defence.
Sandra Baafi Boateng has been on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital since the November 12, 2025, incident, which left five people critically injured during a rush at the recruitment centre.
While the four other victims have recovered and have been discharged, Ms. Boateng remains in critical condition.
Her family says they have spent more than GH¢70,000 on medication alone as doctors continue efforts to stabilise her condition.
The Defence Ministry delegation was led by Brigadier General Albert Sison Ogaja, General Officer Commanding Central Command.
The team first visited Ms Boateng at the hospital before proceeding to meet her family at Esaase near Tanoso in the Ashanti Region.
Brigadier General Ogaja said the visit was to assess Ms Boateng’s condition and brief the Acting Minister of Defence, Dr Ato Forson, on possible government support.
“I am not a medical officer, but her condition is clearly serious. The fact that she has not been able to speak indicates the gravity of the situation. We will report to the Acting Minister and determine the next course of action,” he said.
Ms Boateng’s mother, Marcy Boateng, described the emotional and financial strain on the family.
“She has not spoken since the incident and does not respond to what is happening around her. We are helpless and need government support,” she said.
Her father, Baafi Boateng, expressed appreciation for the ministry’s visit but urged authorities to prioritise his daughter’s medical care.
“We are grateful for the assurance of recruitment for a family member, but our immediate concern is our daughter’s treatment. Whatever support you can offer, please help us,” he appealed.
Brigadier General Ogaja disclosed that one of the immediate measures under consideration is the recruitment of a qualified member of Ms Boateng’s family into the Ghana Armed Forces, subject to meeting age, educational, and medical requirements.
The Ministry of Defence says it will continue to monitor Ms Boateng’s condition and consider further assistance in the coming days.
