Former Minister of Health, Bernard Okoe Boye, has made a significant donation to the Greater Accra Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the lead-up to the Eid festivities, in a move aimed at revitalising the party’s grassroots base.

The donation, which comes at a time when Muslims across Ghana are observing the holy fasting period ahead of Eid, is part of Dr Okoe Boye’s broader effort to reconnect with party faithful and energise support structures in the region.

According to him, the gesture is both symbolic and strategic so as to energise the base of the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr Okoe Boye, who previously served as Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, is currently seeking to become the NPP Greater Accra Regional Chairman.

His campaign, he says, is focused on rebuilding the party’s strength in what is widely regarded as a politically pivotal region.

Speaking at the donation event, he expressed appreciation to his supporters and beneficiaries who have stood by him throughout his political journey. He also acknowledged the critical role constituency executives play in mobilising grassroots support, noting that their backing will be essential in his quest to lead the party in the region.

Some visibly excited constituency executives, in turn, expressed their gratitude for the donation and pledged their support for his bid, describing his leadership vision as timely and necessary.

Addressing concerns about the party’s recent performance, Dr Okoe Boye pointed to a noticeable decline in the NPP’s electoral fortunes over the past eight years. He emphasised the need for renewed energy, strategic engagement, and strong leadership to reverse the trend.

“If you check the data, the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party went down drastically over the past eight years, and we need to do a lot of work to bring back the energy. I am consulting with the elders and patrons in Greater Accra so I can lead the party in the region as Chairman,” he stated.

Highlighting the significance of the Eid period, he underscored the importance of supporting Muslim party members during the fasting season.

“What we are seeing today is to energise the base, especially those who are Muslims. In this period of fasting, it is important to encourage them to pray for the party, pray for the flagbearer, and those of us who want to lead the party and restore it to its glory,” he added.

Dr Okoe Boye reiterated that the party’s revival in Greater Accra is central to its national success.

“We have had a drastic decline in fortunes, and it will take a lot of energy to bring them back. I am ready to lead this journey. Once the Greater Accra Region is revived, the fortunes of the party will be revived nationally.”

The donation and accompanying message signal the start of what is expected to be an active internal political season within the NPP, as aspirants position themselves to steer the party toward a stronger showing in the next electoral cycle.
