GEXIM Deputy CEO: Access to finance key to SME growth

Moses Klu Mensah, Deputy Chief Executive of the Ghana Export-Import Bank, has called for a stronger focus on financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), stressing that access to funding remains critical to improving their productivity and competitiveness.

Speaking at GEXIM’s 10th anniversary international conference in Accra on Thursday, March 26, Mr. Mensah said the is deploying effective ways of channeling finance to SMEs to support production and expansion.

According to him, adequately funded SMEs are better positioned to scale up operations and compete more effectively in both domestic and international markets.

However, he emphasised the need for a clear and deliberate policy direction for the SME sector, raising questions about the long-term vision for such businesses.

”Now, we must be intentional about this specific sector of SMEs. Do we want them to grow into conglomerates, or do we want them to remain at their current level?” he questioned.

Mr. Mensah further highlighted the importance of collaboration and consolidation within the SME sector, noting that stronger partnerships could help improve efficiency and strengthen the overall business ecosystem.
