NDC paid over $1.4bn energy sector debt without borrowing – Suhuyini

Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the NDC communications team, has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made significant strides in addressing Ghana’s energy sector debt, stating that the government has serviced more than $1.47 billion since assuming office in January 2025.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 2, Hamza outlined what he described as the current administration’s proactive and disciplined approach to resolving longstanding financial challenges within the energy sector.

According to him, the scale of debt servicing achieved within a relatively short period demonstrates the NDC’s commitment to stabilising the sector and restoring confidence.

He further argued that the NDC’s performance in managing and addressing the energy crisis surpasses that of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in terms of implementing sustainable solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Hamza maintained that the current government is focused on long-term strategies that will ensure stability and efficiency across the energy value chain.

Drawing a contrast between the two administrations, he criticised the previous government for what he described as its handling of key financial instruments, specifically referencing the collateralisation of the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA).

He indicated that, unlike the NPP, the NDC is prioritising prudent economic management and responsible resource mobilisation to tackle the sector’s challenges without over-reliance on external financing.

“Upon the assumption of office, in a matter of one year, without not having access to the international capital market, we have been able to service in excess of $1.47 billion of the energy sector debt.

“We organised these resources locally through prudent management of the economy but when they had that opportunity, they collateralised our ESLA.”
