An Accra Circuit Court has remanded into police custody a driver and his conductor for transporting large quantities of ammunition from Tema Community Five to Brewaniase in the Oti Region.

Richard Kpimbi, 27, and Latif Adam, 20, were arrested for allegedly conveying 7,000 AAA cartridges and 3,000 BB cartridges concealed in cartons.

They are also accused of transporting and trading in 1,124 rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm AK‑47 assault rifle ammunition for financial benefit.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Haligah, told the Court that the accused persons, together with two accomplices now at large, had been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, namely illicit trafficking in explosives, firearms and ammunition, three counts of illicit trafficking of explosives, firearms and ammunition, and possession of firearms without authority.

He urged the Court to remand the accused persons to enable the police to expedite investigations and arrest their accomplices.

The accused persons, whose accomplices were named as Taufiq Zibil and one Sammy, pleaded not guilty.

Their lawyer’s application for bail was refused.

The Court adjourned the matter to May 21, 2026.

The facts presented were that on April 28, 2026, Police Officers stationed at the Brewaniase barrier intercepted a Man Diesel truck with registration number GW‑9927‑13, driven by Kpimbi with Adam as conductor.

A search revealed boxes containing 7,000 AAA cartridges, 3,000 BB cartridges, 1,124 rounds of AK‑47 ammunition and a pump‑action gun.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the accused persons were transporting the ammunition from Tema Community Five to Damanko in the Oti Region without a licence or lawful permit.

Further investigations revealed they acted on instructions for financial benefit from Zibil and Sammy, who are currently at large.

Prosecution said investigations are ongoing.
