The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly has announced the deployment of a 24-hour taskforce to sustain decongestion efforts at Lapaz following what authorities describe as significant compliance by street traders.

Municipal Chief Executive, Christian Tetteh Badger, said the move is aimed at preventing traders from returning to pavements and roadsides after the assembly’s recent enforcement exercise.

Speaking during an assessment tour of the area on Monday, May 11, the MCE expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance, noting that the majority of traders had complied with the assembly’s seven-day ultimatum to move their wares backward to create space for pedestrians and ease vehicular movement.

He acknowledged that while a few traders were yet to fully comply, the overall response had been positive.

According to him, the taskforce will maintain constant surveillance in the area to ensure traders do not reoccupy the streets.

Lapaz median cleared for pedestrian use

“I can say confidently that at Lapaz, pedestrians are moving freely. Cars are also moving freely. Also we will place our taskforce on 24-hour surveillance on the main median so that anybody who returns, the taskforce will clear them. We are going to make sure that the place is free,” he said.

The exercise forms part of broader efforts by the assembly to improve traffic flow, restore pedestrian access and maintain order within one of Accra’s busiest commercial corridors.
