Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course following the arrest of the incumbent MP, Ohene Frimpong Kwame.
Parliament, in a statement on Tuesday, May 12, confirmed the arrest and disclosed that it was engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather further details.
The statement noted that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House were in close contact with the mission to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akim North.
Speaking to Citi News on Wednesday, May 13, Appiah-Kubi stressed the need for fairness and respect for the rule of law, insisting that the MP should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
He further cautioned against rushing to judge or relying solely on one side of the allegations.
“International law does not allow anyone to be condemned without being allowed to be heard. He remains innocent until proven guilty, and we expect due process to be followed before any conclusions are drawn.”
“When he is given the chance to present his side and a ruling is made, then we can determine who is guilty or otherwise. For now, we should avoid rushing to condemn him or accepting only one side of the evidence while ignoring the other.
“We must uphold the principles of the rule of law and respect fundamental human rights,” he said.
