The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the management of Anlo-Afiadanyigba Senior High School to pay salary arrears amounting to GH₵10,802 to five casual workers employed by the school.
The directive follows revelations in the Auditor-General’s report that the temporary workers were paid GH₵250 a month for nine months in 2024, far below the approved national minimum wage.
According to the report, the workers should have earned at least GH₵490 monthly within the period under review.
Management of the school told the committee that the salaries of the workers have since been increased to GH₵450 per month in 2025.
However, members of the committee noted that the current amount still falls below the approved minimum wage for 2025 and directed the school authorities to pay the outstanding differences accordingly.
The Ranking Member of the Committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, criticised the practice of underpaying vulnerable workers, particularly security personnel, warning that such actions undermine both fairness and accountability.
“Why do you need a security guy? You want this person to secure the school, protect the property and you are underpaying the guy. If you don’t pay him the right amount, he will pay himself. When your computer gets missing don’t go and ask him because you are underpaying him.
“Just because somebody is poor doesn’t mean we should take advantage of that person. Just because somebody needs a job doesn’t mean we have to take advantage of that person. Pay people the right wages,” he said.
PAC Chairperson, Abena Osei-Asare, also backed the directive, insisting that the school must comply fully with wage regulations.
“We will pursue you to make sure that you give it to them because they have worked for it,” she said.
