The Eastern Regional Security Council has temporarily halted the ongoing construction of a China Mall in the New Juaben South Municipality following flooding concerns raised by residents and motorists.

The construction site, located opposite Newlands Hospital at Kenkey Factory near the popular Dadis Bar traffic intersection, was heavily flooded a few days ago, with floodwaters extending onto the main road and disrupting both vehicular and pedestrian movement.

This marks the third time city authorities have halted work on the project over alleged non-compliance with earlier directives regarding the construction of proper drainage systems and culverts agreed upon between authorities and the developers.

The project, which began in early 2025, has faced criticism from residents and road users who accused the Municipal Assembly and the Regional Coordinating Council of negligence and permitting construction within a riparian zone.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who visited the site with police officers and engineers from the Regional Urban Roads Department on Friday, May 22, ordered the immediate suspension of the project.

She also directed the police to ensure enforcement and compliance and instructed the developers to work closely with the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly and the Urban Roads Department to address all engineering concerns before construction resumes.
