The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has broken ground for the construction of a modern conference hall at the Wa Naa Palace, marking the start of the first phase of an initiative to upgrade the seat of the Wala Kingdom’s heritage.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, June 6, Bagbin explained the purpose of the project, stating that “The idea behind the project that we are commencing today is to have a befitting meeting place for the Wa Naa and other traditional authorities, to enable them conveniently host visitors, and also have their own meetings.”
He noted that the project had progressed quickly since its launch. “Four months after the launch, we are breaking ground to commence the construction of the first phase of this project,” he said, adding that it should “signal to all that we indeed mean business.”

Bagbin expressed optimism that the facility could be completed for the Dumba Festival, describing the project as historic.
“This is the second major facelift to this Palace since its construction over five centuries ago,” he stated.
He assured that the palace’s architectural identity would be preserved, stressing that “the current construction will not demolish or vary the original Sudanese architecture.”
He concluded with a call for peace: “Conflict is the worst enemy of development,” urging unity among stakeholders to ensure successful completion of the project.
Jinpenhi Naa, Kadir Ibrahim, speaking on behalf of the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, described the project as another significant contribution by the Speaker toward the growth and modernization of the traditional area.
“Today’s project further demonstrates his enduring commitment to preserving our heritage while promoting development,” he stated.
According to him, the decision by the Speaker to personally fund the construction of the facility reflects a leadership style grounded in action and service to society.
“By personally funding this ultramodern conference hall, Speaker Bagbin has once again shown that true leadership is measured not merely by words, but by tangible contributions to the welfare and advancement of society,” he emphasized.
