The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that 70 excavators seized from illegal mining operators will be handed over to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support a nationwide desilting exercise aimed at addressing persistent flooding challenges across the country.

According to the Minister, the equipment, which was confiscated during anti-galamsey operations, will be redeployed for public use as part of government efforts to improve drainage systems and reduce the impact of flooding, particularly in urban centres such as Accra.

Muntaka made the disclosure while responding to questions on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 10, where he outlined measures being undertaken by the government to tackle Accra’s perennial flooding and improve environmental sanitation.

“Currently, what we are doing is that all the seized excavators from the illegal mining activities – we agreed that about 70 of them should be given to NADMO so that they can take them across the country to do desilting.

“We will do the handover next week so that they can use them to desilt most of the drains but the bottom line is we should begin to clean our surroundings.”

Flooding has remained a recurring challenge in several parts of Ghana, particularly in the capital, Accra, where heavy rains often result in extensive damage to property, displacement of residents, and disruptions to economic activities.

Over the years, experts have identified choked drains, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and unregulated construction on waterways as some of the major causes of urban flooding.
