Account for flood mitigation efforts – Weija-Gbawe MP to Ministers, MMDCEs

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on government ministers and local authorities to account for measures being taken to address recurring flooding across the Greater Accra Region.

Presenting a statement in Parliament on Wednesday, June 10, Mr. Shaib urged the Minister responsible for Works, Housing and Water Resources and other relevant ministers to appear before the House and provide a comprehensive update on government’s flood mitigation strategy.

“I therefore call on the Honourable Minister responsible for Works, Housing and Water Resources, and all relevant Ministers, to appear before this House and present a comprehensive update on Government’s immediate, medium and long-term flood mitigation strategy,” he said.

The MP also questioned the status of the Flood Task Force established by President John Dramani Mahama, calling for its findings and recommendations to be presented to Parliament.

“I also wish to ask: what has become of the Flood Task Force established by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama?” he asked.

According to Mr. Shaib, Parliament must exercise stronger oversight to ensure that flood management efforts move beyond discussions to measurable action.

He further urged the Works and Housing Committee and the Local Government Committee to invite Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives from flood-prone areas to present their preparedness plans and interventions.

“Flood resilience requires accountability at every level — national government, local authorities, technical agencies and communities themselves,” he stated.

The Weija-Gbawe legislator also called for immediate desilting and dredging of drainage systems in vulnerable communities within his constituency, including White Cross, Tetegu, Oblogo, Weija, Djanman, Mallam, Wiaboman and Gonse.

He stressed that government must continue to support flood victims through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) by providing emergency shelter, healthcare, sanitation services and relief items.

Mr. Shaib warned that Ghana would continue to experience devastating flood events unless institutions strengthen enforcement against illegal developments and adopt coordinated long-term flood prevention measures.

He proposed a Greater Accra Flood Resilience Plan built around engineering improvements, nature-based solutions, climate-sensitive urban development, public education and stronger governance mechanisms.

“Let this Parliament not be remembered merely for how many times it talked about floods after they occurred. Let it be remembered as the Parliament that changed Ghana’s approach to flood management,” he said.
