The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a series of measures aimed at ensuring a reliable electricity supply across the country during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The measures were agreed upon at a strategic alignment meeting held on June 9, 2026, between the PURC and the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to review preparedness plans and coordinate operations throughout the tournament.
PURC Executive Secretary Dr. Shafic Suleman said the Commission would closely monitor the performance of the two utilities to ensure consumers enjoy an uninterrupted power supply during the global football event.
According to him, the PURC’s Energy Services and Performance Monitoring Directorate and Regional Operations and Consumer Services Directorate have been tasked to actively monitor power supply reliability and service quality across the country.
The Commission has also obtained direct contact details of key technical personnel from ECG and GRIDCo to facilitate swift regulatory intervention in the event of emergencies and directed both institutions to adopt a joint communication framework to improve public accountability.
As part of its preparedness measures, ECG said all planned maintenance works would be suspended during the World Cup period, with technical teams and contractors stationed near high-demand centres to respond quickly to faults.
Acting Managing Director of ECG, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, said the company would also collaborate with national security agencies to enhance surveillance around critical power infrastructure and prioritise public communication on fault restoration efforts.
GRIDCo, on its part, said it would defer all non-critical maintenance activities and address identified hotspots within the transmission network to improve system stability.
Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, Ing. Frank Otchere, said the company had intensified vegetation management along transmission lines since May 2026 to prevent outages caused by falling tree branches.
He added that all major substations would be manned around the clock during the tournament, while area managers would be deployed to facilitate rapid response to operational challenges.
GRIDCo also indicated that generation schedules had been aligned with power-producing companies to optimise electricity supply throughout the competition.
Dr. Suleman commended the two utilities for adopting what he described as proactive and consumer-centred measures, noting that the initiatives demonstrate a commitment to protecting the interests of electricity consumers.
He said the PURC would continue to monitor operations closely and remain on standby to address any unforeseen issues that may arise during the tournament.
