The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has demolished illegal structures at the Agbogbloshie Onion Market as part of efforts to clear blocked waterways and reduce the risk of flooding in the municipality.
The exercise, conducted with support from the military, police, and national security, targeted structures obstructing drainage channels and contributing to poor sanitation in the area.
Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central, Frank Nkansah, said the operation forms part of a sustained campaign by the Assembly to tackle encroachment on waterways and improve environmental conditions ahead of the peak rainy season.
He noted that previous attempts to keep the waterways clear had been undermined by continued human activities and the re-emergence of illegal structures.
Frank Nkansah urged residents and traders to desist from rebuilding on waterways, stressing that the Assembly would continue enforcement measures to protect lives and property from flooding.
“This is just a continuation of the exercise we are carrying out to clear the waterway. This is something that started in January. We have done a lot of dredging, and we’ve done a lot of desilting, but we’ve noticed that in this particular place, the Agbogbloshie market, the situation persists.
“Because of the human activities here, whenever we desilt the area, it gets filled again when the floodwaters come in, due to those activities,” he said.
