Underdogs rule Matchday 5 as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Cabo Verde earn shock results

The 2026 FIFA World Cup continued to produce unexpected results on Monday, June 15, as a series of spirited performances from underdogs left some of football’s traditional powerhouses frustrated.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt both secured impressive draws against former champions Uruguay and Belgium, respectively, while tournament debutants Cabo Verde pulled off arguably the biggest surprise of the day by holding title favourites Spain to a stalemate.

Saudi Arabia earned a valuable 1-1 draw against Uruguay after Abdulah Al Amri gave the Green Falcons the lead in the 41st minute. The South Americans were forced to rely on an 80th-minute equaliser from Maxi Araujo to salvage a point.

In another upset, Egypt held Belgium to a 1-1 draw. Emam Ashour put the Pharaohs ahead in the 19th minute before an own goal by Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute restored parity for the Red Devils.

However, the standout story of Matchday Five came from Cabo Verde, where the World Cup debutants stunned Spain with a resilient display to earn a draw against one of the tournament favourites.

The result marked another milestone in the remarkable rise of the Blue Sharks, whose fairytale run has captured the imagination of football fans around the world.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha emerged as the hero of the day after producing a series of crucial saves to deny the Spanish attack.

The 40-year-old’s performance quickly gained global attention, with his Instagram following reportedly surging from 46,000 before kick-off to more than five million by the end of the day.

The wave of surprises extended beyond those fixtures, with New Zealand also securing an unexpected draw against Iran, further underlining the growing competitiveness of the expanded World Cup.

The results highlighted the narrowing gap between football’s established powers and emerging nations, with several underdogs proving capable of matching some of the world’s most celebrated teams.

As the group stage continues, the latest round of matches has reinforced the unpredictability that has defined the tournament so far, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what further surprises may lie ahead.

Here are some of the standout moments captured from the matches.
