Smile4mation’s Single Mothers Project is sparking hope across Ghana

The Single Mothers Project by the nonprofit initiative Smile4mation is gaining national attention for its growing impact in supporting vulnerable women and restoring dignity to single mothers facing extreme hardship across Ghana.

The nomination-based initiative has emerged as a widely shared social media phenomenon, with its human-interest stories highlighting resilience while encouraging public participation in community support.

Unlike broader outreach programmes run by the organisation, the project specifically focuses on single mothers who are struggling to survive under difficult economic and social conditions.

Since its launch, the project has supported dozens of women, helping many transition out of abject poverty. Beneficiaries include a mother of three from Prampram who survives by collecting and selling plastic waste, an abandoned mother of six, and a survivor of long-term domestic abuse.

These cases, according to the organisation, reflect the deep vulnerabilities many women face while also demonstrating the potential for recovery when support is provided.

Beyond raising awareness, the initiative provides practical assistance such as startup capital for small businesses, rent and housing support, child care assistance, and mentorship programmes aimed at helping beneficiaries rebuild their lives and achieve financial independence. Organisers say the intervention model is designed to create long-term stability rather than short-term relief.

A spokesperson for the initiative said identifying and supporting single mothers in financial distress remains a core mission of the organisation. The spokesperson added that the project is being expanded as a community-driven platform that encourages the public to nominate women in need.

“This is a culture we are working to establish with the aim of renewing hope. We call on the public to join us in this journey by nominating women in need through our website, so together we can change Ghana one story at a time,” the spokesperson said.
