The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, has encouraged Ghanaian youth to take advantage of scholarship and employment opportunities available through higher education in Japan.
Speaking at a TEDx programme at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the ambassador said studying in Japan could open doors to academic advancement, career growth, and international exposure.
Mr Yoshimoto outlined various opportunities available to international students, including scholarships funded by the Japanese government and universities. He explained that the programmes are designed to attract talented students from across the world while promoting international collaboration in education and research.
He noted that international students in Japan increasingly have opportunities to gain practical experience and enter the country’s labour market, particularly in fields requiring specialised skills and technical expertise.
According to the ambassador, Japan’s strong focus on innovation, technology,, and research creates opportunities for graduates to contribute to key sectors of the economy.
He urged students to see overseas education not only as a pathway to obtaining a degree but also as a platform for personal growth, leadership development and global engagement.
Mr Yoshimoto also provided information on student support services, accommodation arrangements, and visa requirements for prospective students.
Meanwhile, the Chargé d’Affaires at the Japanese Embassy, Naoki Mitori, also introduced participants to the Japanese concept of mottainai, which expresses regret over waste.
He explained that the philosophy promotes respect and appreciation for resources, time, nature, and human effort. Examples include avoiding the waste of food, water, and electricity, and repairing or reusing items instead of discarding them.
Mr Mitori said mottainai encourages mindful consumption and responsible use of resources, values that are deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
Participants expressed interest in the scholarship and career opportunities presented during the programme, which aimed to expose students to global educational opportunities.
The event highlighted the growing educational ties between Ghana and Japan and underscored the role of international education in youth development.
