The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, has announced plans to name the party’s national headquarters after former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings and unveil a bust in his honour.

The initiative forms part of a series of commemorative events scheduled for Monday, June 22, 2026, to mark what would have been the 79th birthday of the party’s founder and former President.

The events, themed “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” are intended to celebrate the life and contributions of the late statesman to Ghana’s democratic development.

According to a statement signed by the NDC Deputy National Communication Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, “The first event of the day will be the naming of the party headquarters after Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings and the unveiling of his bust at 9 am.”

The ceremony is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who will address participants alongside other leading members of the party.

“The event will be addressed by the leader of the party, President John Dramani Mahama, and other leading members of the party,” the statement added.

The second event will be a lecture and exhibition at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

“The second event will be a lecture and exhibition at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences near the CSIR in Accra. That programme starts at 4 pm,” the statement noted.

Renowned Ghanaian lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata will deliver the keynote address.

Other speakers include Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, former Minister for Local Government and current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and former Minister for Information and National Security, Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

The NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation have invited members of the public, party supporters, cadres and well-wishers to participate in the events to honour the late statesman’s legacy.

“Members of the public, party members, supporters and cadres are all invited to participate in the two events to celebrate Flt Lt Rawlings’ birthday and honour his life and legacy,” the statement said.

The commemoration will be held under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
