The National Democratic Congress has renamed its national headquarters in honour of its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and unveiled a bust of the late former President as part of activities commemorating his enduring legacy.

The ceremony, held on Monday, June 22, 2026, formed part of a series of events organised to mark what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday.

Held under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” the commemoration seeks to celebrate the life, leadership, and contributions of the late statesman to Ghana’s political evolution and democratic governance.

The day’s activities began with the official renaming of the party’s headquarters after Rawlings, a symbolic gesture aimed at preserving the memory of the man widely credited with founding the NDC and shaping Ghana’s Fourth Republic. This was followed by the unveiling of a bust in his honour at the party’s headquarters.

Senior party officials, supporters, and dignitaries gathered for the ceremony, which highlighted Rawlings’ influence on Ghana’s democratic journey and the continued relevance of his ideals within the party.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to join the event and deliver an address, alongside other leading figures of the party, as part of tributes to the former military leader-turned-democrat.

Rawlings, who passed away in November 2020, remains one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s contemporary political history. He led the country first as a military ruler before overseeing the transition to constitutional rule and serving as Ghana’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.

The renaming of the party headquarters and the unveiling of the bust underscore the NDC’s efforts to honour the legacy of its founder and reaffirm the values and principles he championed throughout his public life.
