The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has disclosed that more than 9,000 people have been affected by the devastating floods that swept across 13 districts in the Central Region, leaving a trail of destruction and humanitarian challenges in their wake.
The disaster, which occurred over the weekend following heavy rains, claimed the lives of 18 people and led to the collapse of several buildings and other structures.
The floods have also displaced hundreds of residents, many of whom have been forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives, friends, and at designated safe havens established by authorities.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 23, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood, provided an update on the extent of the disaster and the ongoing response efforts.
According to him, hundreds of residents have lost their homes either through direct flood damage or subsequent demolition exercises carried out on unsafe structures.
“We have 377 internally displaced persons as a result of the building collapses and the subsequent demolitions carried out but fortunately, about 90 percent of these victims are coping with family and friends with a few of them at NADMO-designated safe havens where we are managing them.
“Aside that, the floods recorded across in the 13 districts resulted in over 9,000 flood victims and we are currently appealing to the public to send relief items and come to the aid of the victims. We started experiencing these disasters in their severe form in May and we have been there for the victims but we are overwhelmed by the current situation.”
As emergency response efforts continue, NADMO says the scale of the destruction has stretched its resources, prompting an urgent appeal to the public, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, and philanthropists to support affected victims with relief items and other forms of assistance.
