The family of late Ghanaian diplomat James Victor Gbeho has formally notified President John Dramani Mahama of his passing during a courtesy call at the Presidency, in line with cultural and diplomatic protocol, before public announcement of his death.

The delegation, representing the Gbeho family, said the visit, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, was necessary to officially inform the President of the loss of the veteran statesman before details of his death were made public.

Ambassador Gbeho is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential diplomats, with a career spanning national and international service. He served in several diplomatic postings, including at the United Nations in New York, and held key leadership positions in Ghana’s foreign service.

He also served as a Minister for Foreign Affairs and as a Member of Parliament for the Anlo constituency.

At the regional level, he rose to become President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he played a central role in advancing West African integration and cooperation.

Following the notification, President Mahama expressed condolences to the family and reflected on Gbeho’s long service to Ghana, the West African subregion, and the international community.

Gbeho was widely respected for his contributions to diplomacy, particularly his work within ECOWAS and the United Nations system, where he was seen as a strong advocate for regional stability and international cooperation.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
