The Head of Strategic Manufacturing at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Kwasi Ofori-Antwi, has praised the progress made by Ghana’s automotive assembly industry, describing the sector’s growth over the past seven years as impressive when compared to developments in other automotive markets.
Speaking during the Citi Business Festival 2026 Roundtable discussion held under the theme “Driving Ghana Forward: The State of the Automotive Assembly Industry and Its Contribution to the Economy,” Ofori-Antwi highlighted the strides Ghana has made since the introduction of its automotive development policy in 2019.
According to Ofori-Antwi, although the sector is still developing and several policy objectives are yet to be fully realised, Ghana’s achievements within a relatively short period demonstrate significant progress and provide a strong foundation for future growth.
“The Ghana automotive policy was developed and approved in 2019 and we are seven years down the lane. The first assembly plant was established by VW Ghana in 2020 and if we are supposed to compare what we have done, even though most of the objectives have not been fully achieved, it is work in progress.
“I think that if we want to compare ourselves with leading automotive manufacturing countries and what we have done in seven years, I think that we have done more than what they did during those periods.”
The roundtable brought together policymakers, industry leaders, manufacturers and stakeholders in the automotive value chain to assess the sector’s performance, challenges and prospects for growth.
Discussions centred on the industry’s contribution to job creation, technology transfer, skills development and industrialisation efforts in Ghana.
The Ghana Automotive Development Policy was introduced as part of the government’s broader industrial transformation agenda aimed at positioning the country as a hub for automotive assembly and manufacturing in West Africa.
The policy was designed to attract global vehicle manufacturers, encourage local production, reduce dependence on imported used vehicles and stimulate investment across the automotive value chain.
