The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Volkswagen Ghana, Jeffrey Oppong Peprah, has called for stronger government engagement to support the country’s automotive industry, warning that some investors in the sector are reportedly reconsidering their commitments due to challenges affecting operations.
He said the industry needs sustained government backing to consolidate gains made under Ghana’s automotive industrialisation agenda, stressing that closer collaboration is critical to its survival and growth.
He made the remarks in a discussion at the third Citi Business Festival 2026 Roundtable on Thursday, June 25, on the theme: Driving Ghana Forward: The State of the Automotive Assembly Industry and Its Contribution to the Economy.
According to him, stakeholders in the automotive space are increasingly concerned about the investment climate, with some Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) allegedly expressing frustration over current conditions.
He noted that while significant investments have already been made in the sector, some industry players believe the returns have not matched expectations, creating uncertainty among investors.
Mr. Oppong Peprah warned that the situation could have broader consequences if not urgently addressed, adding that some foreign-based directors of OEMs are reportedly considering exiting the Ghanaian market.
He stressed that the concerns should not be treated as political issues but rather as a national development agenda that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.
“We need government to hold our hands to get to where we want to be. And all these things will come in. We feel that we are drowning now, absolutely. I made this statement when we had a presidential dialogue.
“I said it and it’s true. Because at currently all the investments that we have done is really a negative and with some of our members, their OEMs and directors abroad are even threatening to move out of this country.
“This is where it’s getting and we must take it seriously. That is why we are asking for government engagement to speak with us to know our problems,” he said.
