Creativity, design and media across sports: How Samuel Wumbee builds brands through storytelling

A Creative Force Shaping the Modern Sports Landscape
In today’s sports industry, success extends far beyond what happens on the field, court, or track. As fan expectations evolve and digital platforms continue to reshape how audiences engage with teams and athletes, design and media have become foundational pillars of modern sports organisations.

Branding, content creation, and storytelling now play a critical role in how programs attract talent, build communities, and establish lasting identities. Within this landscape, Samuel Wumbee, a Ghanaian award-winning multidisciplinary designer, has emerged as a leading creative specialising in branding, design, and video for sports brands and organisations.

His work focuses on creating meaningful impact through strategic storytelling, developing creative systems that connect with audiences across multiple platforms. Rather than viewing design as a standalone discipline, Wumbee approaches every project through the lens of strategy—building visual narratives that resonate with athletes, fans, recruits, consumers, and stakeholders alike.

Building a Foundation Through Design

Wumbee’s creative foundation is rooted in graphic design, a discipline that continues to shape his approach to storytelling and brand development. His philosophy centers on creating strong visual systems that can adapt across a wide range of applications, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in both digital and print environments.

A graduate of SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College in Tema, Ghana, and Texas Christian University’s BFA Graphic Design program, Wumbee entered the industry with extensive experience working alongside sports-related brands and organisations.

His portfolio spans collegiate athletics, sports technology, and sports beverage companies, providing him with a unique understanding of how visual communication functions within different sectors of the sports ecosystem.

This versatility allows him to create work that is not only visually compelling but strategically aligned with organisational goals.

Transforming a Program Through Recruiting: TCU Women’s Basketball
Among Wumbee’s most impactful projects was his work with Texas Christian University Women’s Basketball during a pivotal period in the program’s history. Following the 2022–23 season, in which the team finished with an 8–23 record and underwent a major coaching transition, Wumbee was hired as the sole designer supporting recruiting efforts under newly appointed Head Coach Mark Campbell.

The recruiting campaign centered around two key narratives: Campbell’s proven reputation as a winner—having captured championships and trophies at every coaching stop throughout his career—and TCU’s unique position as a university offering a close-knit, small-school environment paired with the resources and visibility of a major athletic program.

As the lead designer, Wumbee developed a comprehensive recruiting ecosystem that included digital presentations, social media content, recruiting videos, personalized print mail-outs, and custom-designed recruiting visit materials such as player identification badges and experiential collateral. Every touchpoint was crafted to reinforce the program’s new vision and communicate a compelling story to prospective student-athletes.

The campaign, combined with the program’s broader recruiting strategy, helped support the commitment of some of the nation’s top transfer portal athletes, including Hailey Van Lith, Olivia Miles, Sedona Prince, and Jaden Owens. The transformation was immediate and historic. Within a short period, TCU advanced to NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight appearances while securing back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championships, establishing itself as one of the premier programs in women’s college basketball.

Defining the Visual Identity of Throne Sport Coffee

Another notable project in Wumbee’s portfolio involved helping shape the social media visual identity and creative direction for Throne Sport Coffee. Developed in support of the launch of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ new latte product line, the project focused on establishing a cohesive visual language that would resonate with a highly active, ambitious, and self-motivated audience seeking convenient, performance-oriented coffee products, drawing inspiration from the world of American football through Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wumbee played a key role in developing the brand’s visual standards, creating guidelines for photography, videography, graphic design, and content execution. These creative principles formed the foundation for a wide range of marketing assets, including social media campaigns, product launch videos, commercial content, and digital advertising materials.

Beyond the visual identity, a complementary tone of voice was established to strengthen brand consistency and deepen audience engagement. Together, the visual and verbal systems created a cohesive brand experience that positioned Throne Sport Coffee within the growing intersection of sports performance, lifestyle, and consumer packaged goods.

Since the launch campaign, the brand has continued to expand its market presence, with products entering major retail environments including Sheetz and Whole Foods, reflecting the success of a strong and scalable brand foundation.

Storytelling as a Competitive Advantage

At the center of Wumbee’s work is a belief that successful design is ultimately about human connection. Whether recruiting elite athletes, launching consumer products, or building long-term brand equity, his creative process focuses on developing narratives that audiences can connect with on a personal level.

By combining design, motion, video, and strategy, Wumbee helps sports brands tell stories that extend beyond individual campaigns and create lasting impressions.

His work demonstrates how thoughtful storytelling can become a competitive advantage, strengthening relationships between organizations and the communities they serve.

Looking ahead, Wumbee continues to expand his impact within the sports and entertainment industries through his work at Red Productions, an award-winning video production company.

He is currently contributing to projects involving organizations such as the Texas Rangers and Red Bull, continuing to explore new ways of blending creativity, design, and media to shape the future of sports storytelling.
