NIA prosecutes over 60 people for Ghana Card-related offences

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has revealed that it has prosecuted more than 60 people over the past year for offences related to the Ghana Card registration process.

According to the Authority, robust systems have been implemented to detect fraudsters, including individuals who vouch for unknown persons and those who provide false information to enable unqualified individuals to obtain Ghana Cards.

In an interview with Citi News, the Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, disclosed that five persons were convicted and sentenced, while five others were remanded in Accra last week for providing false information during the registration process.

He urged Ghanaians to desist from vouching for unknown individuals, warning that such actions could have legal consequences.

“As for the number of people we have prosecuted or jailed so far, I am talking about numbers between 60 and 80 in the last one year. Our system is robust that when you get to centre and you provide information that you are vouching for somebody, you present you Ghana Card, you are asked who is the applicant to you. If you say he is your sister, brother or cousin, your information in the system must align.

“For example, if you are from Kwahu and you come and vouch for Kojo Manu who is an Anlo. How are you brothers?,” he said.
