Residents occupying structures along waterways in parts of the Ga East Municipality have been given until Thursday, July 16, to vacate the areas ahead of a planned demolition exercise by the assembly.
According to the Ga East Municipal Assembly, the move is part of measures to prevent future flooding following recent heavy rains that claimed 11 lives in one of the affected communities.
Briefing the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, during his tour of selected sites, the Environmental Health Officer for Dome-Kwabenya, Ing. Charles Asabreh Ampomah, said the affected occupants have been notified to leave before the exercise begins.
“There are still a lot we are going to do. There is a particular area with a lot of squatters and a choked drain; about 11 people died in that area. As part of efforts to avert future floods, the place has been marked for demolition.
“We have given them a deadline. By Thursday, they are all supposed to leave the place after which the Assembly will go and conduct the demolition exercise,” he said.
The assembly said the demolition forms part of efforts to clear encroachments on waterways and improve drainage systems within the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Queen Mother of Dome Market, Evelyn Abena Sedei, has appealed to the government to sustain the national clean-up exercise.
She said the exercise has helped improve sanitation conditions in the Dome area.
“This is a good initiative which must continue. The waste here in Dome was terrible, but now we have been relieved. We thank the government so much,” she said.
