The Government of Ghana, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has facilitated the safe return of 144 Ghanaian migrants from Libya under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) Programme.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, said the returnees arrived at the Accra International Airport on Tuesday, July 14, in two batches.
The Ministry said the exercise forms part of ongoing collaboration between the government and the IOM to support Ghanaian nationals stranded abroad, particularly in conflict-prone and high-risk migration destinations such as Libya.
Upon arrival, the returnees underwent immigration and health screening and received immediate assistance, including food, psychosocial support, and transportation.
“They will also be enrolled in reintegration programmes aimed at supporting their successful return to their communities through livelihood assistance, vocational skills trainin,g and other socio-economic empowerment initiatives, subject to individual assessments,” the statement said.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and thanked the IOM and other partners for their support in facilitating safe returns and reintegration.
It also urged prospective migrants to use regular migration channels and avoid the dangers associated with irregular migration and human smuggling.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue working with the IOM, Ghana’s diplomatic missions, and relevant state institutions to provide assistance to Ghanaians in distress abroad and promote safe, orderly, and regular migration.
